NR 228 Case Study Assignment #1
Scenario
You are the nurse working with Ann. Ann was recently diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type II,
and she doesn’t seem to understand the disease process and its life-long effect on her. She
states, “I believe I will soon be off all of these meds and daily shots, and I will be back to my
usual self. I can’t wait”
1. What will be your initial response to Ann about diabetes mellitus and its management?
Educate the patient on how to manage the disease process and how it will affect her
lifestyle
After the diagnosis, A1C levels must be checked every 3months and an A1C
goal/target will be determined by her doctor that varies depending on her age and
other factors but mostly below 7%. An elevated A1C level may signal the need for
a change in her medication, meal plan or activity level.
In addition to the test, BP, blood, and urine samples will also be taken periodically
to check her cholesterol levels, thyroid function, LFTs, and kidney function
Regular eye and foot exams are also important
Managing a type 2 diabetes require weight loss, healthy eating, regular exercise,
possible diabetes medication or insulin therapy and regular blood sugar
monitoring
2. She asks, “What is the difference between the two main types of diabetes?”
Type 1 diabetes: The body attacks the cells in the pancreas, which means it cannot make
any insulin. Symptoms appear more quickly. Managed by taking insulin to control the
blood sugar. Currently, there is no cure and what caused it is still idiopathic.
