There is no real cut and dry scenario when it comes to delivering care to clients.
Knowledge and skills always apply when providing care plan to improve patient outcomes and
satisfaction. Through the research studies and theory application, development of evidence-based
practice will result in a nursing profession whereby knowledge and skill will be the main drivers
to the provision of quality care. This assignment locates Nightingale’s environmental theory and
Abraham Maslow’s motivational theory as the nursing and non-nursing theories respectively, that
complements each other to deliver quality care.
Florence Nightingale’s environmental theory remains relevant to nursing practice today.
Nightingale experiences as a nurse made her believe that several challenges that occur in nursing
are brought about by the environment patients live and are not directly related to the illness
(Butts & Rich, 2018). The APRN need to recognize environmental elements can exacerbate
client health when providing patient care and find interventions to help them attain the desired
outcome.
Abraham Maslow’s motivational theory is the non-nursing theory that complements
Nightingale’s theory. Abraham Maslow’s theory primarily focuses on a hierarchy of needs
(McLeod, 2018). Maslow believed that individuals get motivated to obtain a particular need, and
some requirements assume preference over others. Both motivational and environmental theories
focus on basic human needs (Sher, 2018). Therefore, it will be difficult for a patient to make
positive progress if these needs are not met.
The APRN needs to observe the client's home setting before discharge by applying both
theories to enhance the desired patient outcome. In situations where the living condition of a
