Note your role specialization and briefly describe the problem you are interested in researching
and why this is of interest to you.
Discuss your library search strategies and briefly summarize the literature you reviewed. Focus
your discussion on the “problem” and how the literature you identified provides evidence of the
existence of the problem.
Include in your discussion a potential innovation that you might consider as a solution to the
problem identified.
Include citations/references in APA style format, using citations where appropriate.
My role specialization is Nurse Practitioner. The problem of childhood obesity is
interesting to me because I deal with the topic on a daily basis. Research on this topic will
potentially allow for better communication with patient’s parents during my nutritional
counseling sessions. Moving forward in my career, I plan to work with hypertension and diabetes
programs within Georgia’s Department of Public Health. Since childhood obesity has been
linked to comorbidities including hyperinsulinemia, obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia in
adulthood, I believe that this research topic will positively contribute to my current and future
professional endeavors (Moglia & Dill, 2013).
Library search strategies for the research topic included a general search for “childhood
obesity” and a follow up search for “childhood obesity prevention.” The current research and
research moving forward throughout the course will seek to answer the question: “What are
common traits of those suffering from childhood obesity and how can these commonalities be
used to aid the medical community in prevention of the disease?” An article by Moore, Wilkie, &
Desrochers (2017) discussed familial influence on childhood obesity and how familial
socialization can either lead a child toward or away from obesity. Research conducted by TurnerJohnson, Montgomery, Clark, & Taylor (2017) sought to describe how the Community Readiness
Model assessed the stage of readiness for childhood obesity prevention in a rural, southern
community. Finally, Alleman, Murphy, Baskerville, & Chugh (2017) performed research to
assess the prevalence of childhood obesity and hypertension among kindergarten, sixth-, and
ninth-grade students. The research highlighted the “need to support implementation and
evaluation of polices to reduce childhood obesity”
