The role of the TeacherFamily Educational Rights and
Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Family education rights and privacy
Act (FERPA) is a law that protects the
privacy of students education records.
This law applies to all schools that
receives funding from the United States
Department of Education. FERPA also
gives parents certain rights as well, these
rights transfer to students wants they are
of age which is 18 years old.First step: Identifying A Child
Need
“ There are several
children that may or
may not be diagnosed
with a disability by
there school district
provider or a medical
provider, however, one
must understand that
being diagnosed with a
disability is not a
guarantee of services
under the IDEA
(IDEA(2004)”.

If your child is diagnosed with a learning
disability or impairment the next step is
the draft of an individualized education
program which is also called (IEP).
According to The Individuals with
Disability Education Act (IDEA) “it gives
school districts 30 days from the
documentation of the disability to
complete an IEP and parents must be
given permission and notified and given
placement as apart of the plan (IDEA.
2004)”.
