Concepts of Middle Range Theories
Nursing theories are critical in the nursing practice as they “offer structure and
organization to nursing knowledge and provides a systematic means of collecting data to
describe, explain, and predict nursing practice” (McEwen & Wills, 2014, p. 25). Middle range
theories have lesser concepts and very specific in nature (McEwen & Wills, 2014). Middle range
theories are used in research as it emphasizes the goal of the research (Fawcett & Garity, 2009).
Middle range theories are simple and they are used more often in nursing research (Grove,
Burns, & Gray, 2013). The focus of the middle range theories are the patient’s problems and
their outcomes (McEwen & Wills, 2014). Middle range theories explain the concepts between
the various disciplines in health care and the actions that affects each other (McEwen & Wills,
2014).
Nursing Role in Middle Range Theories
Middle range theories could be utilized in nursing practice or tested the areas of acute
patient care settings, disease prevention, and health promotion disciplines (Jacelon, Furman, Rea,
Macdonald, & Donoghue, 2011). A selected middle range theory must be evaluated before it
was applied in nursing practice or in nursing research (McEwen & Wills, 2014). In health care,
there is an increased number of evidence based practices (EBPs) are implemented to be utilized
as clinical decision support tools. EBPs help to improve the patient outcomes (Murrock &
Higgins, 2009). Middle range theories can be further reshaped for future knowledge
development, so that it would be utilized more (Liehr & Smith, 2017). When a nursing scholar
conducts a research on a middle range theory, it adds the value and generates an empirical
evidence to the benefit of the theory (Liehr & Smith, 2017). As a future nurse leader, I would
like to improve the use of middle range theories in nursing practice and in nursing research. I am
