1- Test 2 - Chapter 15 Example: We can factor x^2 + 6x + 8 by finding integers m and n as that this trinomial is written as: ( x + m ) ( x + n ). ( x + m ) ( ... x + n ) = x^2 + nx + mx + mn FOIL Method = x^2 + ( n + m ) x + mn Distributive Property Comparing these results with the trinomial shows that we must find integers m and n having the sum of 6 and a product of 8. -Because many integers have a sum of 6, its best to begin my listing the pairs of integers that are a product of 8. *Also, both 6 and 8 are positive so we are only considering positive pairs for the integers. SO, we have 8*1=8, and 2*4=8. Out of these pairs 2 and 4 make a SUM of 6. We have found our two required integers. ( 2 & 4 ). x^2 + 6x + 8 is factored as ( x + 2 ) ( x + 4 ). **To check (FOIL) make sure the sum of the outer and inner products produces the correct middle term.** A baseball team has home games on Wednesday and Sunday.
