School Uniform should be Mandatory
Dress code disputes are fit as a fiddle, and are not prone to vanish at any point in the near
future. Drafting an effective dress code regulation is both a craftsmanship and a science. The
keys to a fruitful dress arrangement are sound judgment, the capacity to bargain, and the desire
of all parties required to work through their disparities. Some people argue that school dress code
policies can influence the behavior of students, reading environment as well as academic
performance of the students. Others argue that uniform arrangements undergird the presumption
that a kid's ability to go up against contrast is immaterial.
School uniforms are believed to restore order in classrooms and make the learning
environment conducive for the learners as well as the teachers (Anderson, 2002, p. 3). However,
dress code and uniform policies do not address the same issue. The former dictates what must
not be worn while the latter states what must be worn. The biggest challenge encountered by
schools in formulating and adopting dress code is that fashions change frequently, thus making it
hard for schools to keep up with changing fashions. They hence end up adopting the general
dress codes (Anderson, 2002, p. 6). The supporters for strict dress codes and uniforms for
students justify their arguments by stating the advantages of standardized dress in a classroom set
up. These advantages include; enhanced school safety (reduced violence), conducive learning
environment, increased self-esteem among students as well as reduced or less stress on the
family to keep their kids up the fashion (Anderson, 2002, p. 7).Dress codes give students peace
of mind and this can increase their overall performance, give them a positive attitude towards
work, improved discipline and increased respect for their teachers. Dress code is an equalizer
that conceals the income of a child’s family thus promoting the spirit of unity in schools as well
as peace at homes since kids and parents do not have to worry about what the students will have
to put on so as to look as beautiful and fashionable as others (Anderson, 2002, p. 8). However,
parents support standardized uniforms whereas the kids do not. Some of them seem not to get the
connection between dress code and performance. They feel that they can be at the top of the
world and still make it in class, but this does not in to the effects that the funny dress codes might
have on others (Anderson, 2002, p. 12). When they are justified by a school’s conditions,
astutely considered in collaboration with the community, and combined with proper mediations,
dress codes and school-uniform policies may emphatically impact school climate, student
behavior, and scholarly achievement. In any case, it is critical to keep such policies in legitimate
point of view and avoid overestimating or exaggerating their latent capacity benefits (Anderson,
