NR 535 Week 2 Discussion: Paradigm Shift (GRADED A)

Document Content and Description Below

NR 535 Week 2 Discussion: Paradigm Shift There has been an educational paradigm shift from a focus on teaching to learning. Consider the following statement in light of the shift from teaching ... to learning: "Teachers don't fail students; students fail themselves." Do you agree or disagree? Provide .examples that support your position The statement of teachers do not fail students; students fail themselves is not a reasonable statement. The standard variable of a student and teacher relationship is learning. Learning to me is defined as acquiring and processing information to gain understanding. As Dr. Raithel stated in her module two video, adults are more self-directed due to motivation. To me, this means adults actively enroll and participate in school to either acquire more knowledge for themselves, update a skill set, start a new career, or to earn more money. It is a personal decision not mandated by law like it is for children. For adults that are mandated to return to school for work, learning may seem forced, and the student may struggle to embrace the idea. An example of this would be nurses who have to return to school for BSN degrees due to hospital policy. The opportunity to encourage and inspire the reluctant nurse to strive for excellence in their career field helps facilitate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for success in .patient care and the nursing field I believe learning is a relationship between teacher and student, and like all relationships is a shared responsibility. A teacher could not present all the information needed to succeed and expect a student to pass the final exam after the first day. The student would also have to participate in the teacher-student relationship and do their part in studying and reading the information given to them to pass the exam. Student responsibility includes actively participating in the learning process, following directions, and paying attention to achieve their education goals. As a nurse educator, it will be my responsibility to present information clearly and concisely while also helping students develop critical thinking skills, according to Nowell et al (2017). The complex nature of nurse educators' role is to support students to become competent and knowledgeable nurses, as mentioned by Hamlin (2020). Educators are now administrators, clinical instructors, and still hold traditional classroom roles. Many educators are lifelong learners and students themselves when they attend graduate school or seek advanced certifications to understand what is needed of a student to be successful. I believe this full circle moment exemplifies how being a student will allow educators to relate to students and understand how to help .them perform better References Hamlin, L. (2020). Nurse Education Today, 37, 91-96. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.nedt.2015.11.020 ,Hi Hicham I agree with your statement that students have more control and ownership over their learning experience. The entire idea of healthcare, and all of its components, have moved towards a service driven design. Nursing students have more options now then they did ten years ago when I was in school for my BSN. The variety of settings has increased from distant learning programs, to traditional 4-year college programs, and most recently my hospital, Northwell Health has announced launching a BSN program in Fall 2021. In addition to more options, nursing schools recognize this and are striving to be the best option for students by offering more resources, educational support, and in some cases helping with job placement. With the available selections, students will succeed within the most convenient lifestyle option for them. Nursing schools are realizing that support of their students yields successful students who will recommend and endorse the school. This will lead to an increase in admissions due to the positive reputation that ultimately increases revenue. I personally do not know too many people that will pay for tuition only to fail and not have anything to show for it. No one wants to fail, neither the teacher nor the student. I am a firm believer of you get what you give. As an educator I wouldn’t want any of my students to fail and will try my best to educate, support, and encourage in any way possible to lead my students to success. Hopefully my actions will encourage my students to try their best and work hard. Remembering my own insecurities as a nursing student, I will seek to encourage and support students the way in which they learn best. Because we are a team and we will have to work together to .both succeed [Show More]
