Shelley approaches you as an innovation consultant for KSG. You are required to apply the theoretical and
practical principles you learnt in this course to provide insight into KSG’s innovation problems. Use evidence from
the case study to support your analyses and recommendations.
1. Diagnose forces of change in the men’s shirt industry and give your reasoned opinion on how this
influences the attractiveness of the Plastiwear opportunity. (5)
2. Distinguish between incremental, radical and disruptive innovation. What type of innovation would you
classify GreenPlastics as and why. Use evidence from the case study to support your answer. (5)
3. Innovation champions play a critical role in the innovation process. Briefly explain to Shelley what the
role and characteristics of innovation champions are and who could fulfil this role within KSG? (5)
4. Joseph Black has mentioned to Shelley that he is concerned about the number of innovations KSG has
been able to bring to the market the last few years. He is concerned that the internal climate within KSG
might not be supportive for innovation. Shelley asks your advice on diagnosing the innovation climate
with KSG. Explain to her what instruments are available to measure the innovation climate and
recommend a suitable instrument. Remember to explain what will be measured, the approach that
needs to be taken and the benefits there-of. (10)
5. Resistance or organisational blockages to creativity and innovation is to be expected within
organisations, according to Goodman and Dingli (2017).
5.1 Distinguish between perceptual, process and environmental blockages. (3)
5.2 Which of these organisational blockages are evident within KSG from the case study? Use
examples to support your answer. (2)
6. It seems that despite KSG having a Research and Development (R&D) department, they lack an
innovation strategy. Discuss why this is problematic with Shelley, using examples from the case study to
highlight KSG’s approach. Advise her regarding the essential tasks involved in creating and
implementing an innovation strategy for KSG
