Human resources are a valuable paradigm for how businesses are effectively running
today. Having organizational structure and an effective plan of action sets a clear perspective and
aspiration for companies while identifying resources within the people that are hired. It is
important to empower the human resource department to ensure that it assists businesses with
growth and success. The integration of the human resources and the management team will
ensure guarantee achievements of the organization with recruitment, training, & retention of
employees (Baker, 2016). In this case study, we will examine important concepts of the human
resource department through the lens of the Maersk Corporation.
Human Resource Management Functions and Practices
Strategic human resource planning is about combining planning of human resources to
the business’s critical outline to ensure that human resource activities are supporting and
advancing the organization's strategy. Human resources are vital in strategy foundation, because
human resources assist the company to determine whether a strategy should be implemented
within the core of the business structure of the company. A comprehensive plan from human
resources will support other departments such as marketing, financial, operational and
technology departments to support the direction in which the organization is moving. It would be
a fatal error to develop and implement human resource strategies without having regard for the
goals and objectives of organization.
With the prominence of globalization, the Maersk Group is guided by many factors of
engaging in seeking diverse individuals that can contribute a range of ideas and influences to
assist the organization. With many companies integrating globally, many business operations
need to unify their company operations to conduct business worldwide. Worldwide integration or
globalization is a term that refers to the unification of business’s operations, methods into

divergent cultures, merchandise, supplies and concepts. Since there is significance on diversity,
this integration on a global level has a profound impact on how business govern their employees.
Human resources can prepare organizations to manage the global conditions of
businesses, but human resources face a supply and demand of talent that can be diverse in
cultures, languages and social backgrounds. Businesses appealing to this distinct headhunting
acknowledges the value of having the right workers within the organization that can contribute to
the strategic plan of the company.

The company had traditionally relied on training inexperienced individuals, but the company
experienced growth, it needed experienced professionals and managers to run the organization
(Groyberg & Abbott, 2013). The company had focus on entry level training for individuals two
years and sent to them oversees to run operations of the company. After experiencing a lack of
return on these employees and the cost to train them, the program was closed (Groysberg &
Abbott, 2013).
