Central Focus a. Describe the central focus and the essential literacy strategy for comprehending OR composing text you will teach in the learning segment. In this learning segment, students will extend their previous understanding of multiplication, division, and fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers. To help them understand, they will be required to take notes of key concepts and the steps used to solve each type of problem in a math notebook. Not only will writing this down help them concentrate better, but it will also produce a great resource for them to use later when they can’t remember how to solve a problem. Other strategies that will be used during this learning segment will be having students present problems to the class, asking students to write down how they solved a problem, and discussing with each other how they solved a problem by explaining the concept. It is important for students to understand multiplying and dividing integers because the subject of mathematics can be extended in the real world and broaden a student’s understanding of how it can used in their everyday life. Therefore, the central focus will lead students to make connections in real-world situations such as describing an event and the concepts of multiplying and dividing signed numbers used to describe that event. Such events will include a total change in a player’s score during a game, increase or decrease of money, weight gain or weight loss, how to evaluate a response on a test, and how a cost can be divided between a certain number of people.
