Diversity is important for others to understand and value the difference in
others. Although not all people agree there is a need for diversity, I think it is
something to be admired. Institutional oppression against people with disabilities is
something that should not be taken lightly, but usually is. People with disabilities are
often seen as “not able” or “unequal.” While reading the article Section 504, the ADA,
and Public Schools, I was reminded of why I plan to be employed as an Art Therapist
in a public school system. I plan to work with children with disabilities because I
believe they deserve the positive attention in schools that they often times do not
receive. When most people think of “disabilities” they think of Autism, Down
Syndrome, Deafness, Blindness, etc. But what about the children who are slow
learners or have learning disabilities? What about the children with severe
emotional or behavioral disorders? Do they not deserve the same support as
children who are have more intensive needs?
“Recently, the role played by Section 504 and the ADA in schools has
increased substantially; no longer are schools able to ignore these two acts (Smith).“
That excerpt, taken from the article, is one of the reasons why this article impacted
me. Much like other parents, educators, and doctors, I love diversity in the schools
systems and I think it is something for people to celebrate and not hide or ignore. As
you can tell, change has already been made. Public schools systems are starting to
become more aware of the oppression. But why stop there? I plan to keep the
