The world of sports is continuously evolving over the years as the world gets modernized each
and every day, and the use of technology is just one of those areas that has made an impact on
many sports in the modern day. Umpire Decision Review System is also a kind of technology in
the world of sports that is used for the referral a decision that is made by an umpire. Generally,
umpire decision review system is used in the game of Cricket, Tennis, Hockey and Football.
Umpire review system was introduced to International Cricket in the name of 3rd Umpire on
November 14th 1992 in the match between India vs South Africa. One of the cricketing legend
Sachin Tendulkar was the first victim to the 3rd Umpire Decision. Earlier 3rd umpire decision was
only used for the purpose of runouts. Later in 2008 the umpire decision review system was
introduced to International cricket in the between India and Sri Lanka. Here players can ask the
3rd umpire is off the field to recheck the decision made by on field umpire by taking review.
Three main technologies were used in the decision review system.
1. Hawk-Eye or Ball Tracker (For the Leg Before Appeals (LBW))
2. Hot-Spot Technology (For Caught Behind and LBW)
3. Snick Meter Technology (To Sense the ball hitting are through sound)
Hawk-Eye
Hawk Eye is a technology that is used in the game of cricket for the purpose of judging the LegBefore Appeals. Hawk-Eye is implemented using the image processing and tracking system of
six cameras that are placed all around the stadium.
Hot-Spot
Hot-Spot is used to make judgement on caught behind situation in the game of cricket. This is a
technology that used image processing through infrared cameras by sensing the friction
generated by heat.
