Health and Wealth
Health and wealth have been intrinsically connected for as long as both have existed. As
everything in society has a cost, you cannot have a solid foundation for a healthcare without the
money to back it up. In the United States we can see this foundation lacking for those without the
financial capacity to support it, and the effects of this following children throughout their lives.
Starting at a young age, the stress of parents can affect their children in toxic ways, leading to
poor attention span and financial illiteracy. Toxic stress affects the way young growing minds
function, their ability to process new information, and sets them up for failure later in life.
Mental illness is a hot topic in society today; what it is, who gets it, and how to manage
it. One thing I have found within my journey through depression is that it is not something that
can be cured, but something that can be managed. If I had known this at an earlier age I would
have understood what was happening to me and took steps to cure it early, rather than fight a
losing battle until I was well into my twenties. Affordable and accessible resources are some of
the most important factors in building up a community’s health. Mental illness is a side effect of
stress and poverty and providing adequate care can lead to adults learning how to manage their
symptoms and develop healthy coping mechanisms that they can pass on to their children to help
them lead happier and mentally sound lives. “Whether it's a new immigrant facing poverty and
