Describing the location of each body part
Tongue - the back of the mouth, the tongue is anchored into the hyoid bone. The tongue is vital
for chewing and swallowing food, as well as for speech. The four common tastes are sweet, sour,
bitter, and salty. A fifth taste, called umami, results from tasting glutamate
Pharynx - the muscular tubular passage of the vertebrate digestive and respiratory tracts
extending from the back of the nasal cavity and mouth to the esophagus
Esophagus - a muscular tube that conveys food from the mouth to the stomach and that in
humans is about nine inches (23 centimeters) long and passes from the pharynx down the neck

between the trachea and the spinal column and behind the left bronchus where it pierces the
diaphragm slightly to the left of the middle line and joins the cardiac end of the stomach
Liver - located in the upper right-hand portion of the abdominal cavity, beneath the diaphragm
and on top of the stomach, right kidney, and intestines. The liver, a dark reddish-brown organ,
has multiple functions.
Stomach - muscular organ located on the left side of the upper abdomen. The stomach receives
food from the esophagus. As food reaches the end of the esophagus, it enters the stomach
through a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter. The stomach secretes acid and
enzymes that digest food.
Gallbladder – This small gland is located in the right upper quadrant to the left of the liver and
right to the stomach.
Pancreas – This organ is located inferior and dorsal to the stomachs right side and is within the
upper quadrants of the abdominal cavity.
Transverse colon – is underneath the pancreas and gallbladder and connects the small intestine
to the rectum. This is also the top-most part of the large intestine.
Descending colon- is a lower section of the large intestine located below the transverse colon on
the opposite side.
Appendix – is located at the bottom of the ascending colon.
Rectum – is located at the bottom of the transverse colon and in the lower-middle of the body
above the anal canal.
Anal canal- is located below the rectum and is the lowest portion of the digestion system.
