1. As discussed in the lesson and assigned reading for this week, EHRs provide both benefits and drawbacks. Create a “Pros” versus “Cons” table and include at least 3 items for each list. Next to each item, provide a brief rationale as to why you selected to include it on the respective list.
Pros Rationale
Accessible I think this is an essential aspect of the EHR. For instance, in a hospital, if a doctor wants to document on his/her patients, he/she could sit in front of
one computer and access all of his/her patient's EHR.
Real-time It is crucial to have real-time updates on EHR because everyone is seeing the EHR could see what is going on with the patient’s present status. This
will minimize the delay of services the patient requires and the outcome.
Security The part of the security I am referring to is when an actual paper chart is used, and it always gets lost because everyone forgets who and/or where
the chart was last used.
Cons Rationale
Downtime/ System
malfunction When the computer is down due to updates and/or technical issues, it makes it difficult to access the EHR. It delays the documentation, orders,
updates, and services of the patient.
Hacking The probability of an outside source illegally obtaining private patient
information is always an issue of high sensibility.
Communication Availability The issue is when a provider does not have the updated availability in their practice and is not able to access the EHR from other providers and/or facilities. The doctor has to wait until they get copies faxed to their
practice to be able to see what the patient had done.
