Dr. O and class,
The past eight weeks have been both challenging and rewarding. The knowledge
and skills I have attained throughout the course include: the writing of SOAP notes, formulating
differential diagnoses, performing hands on assessments with my family and friends, and also
during week seven at Immersion in St. Charles IL. I feel I have a great base of knowledge to
help guide through the upcoming courses and clinical.
Program Outcome #1 Practice safe, high-quality advanced nursing care based on
concepts and knowledge from nursing and related disciplines.
This class has given me the tools to achieve Program outcome #1 by providing me with
information on how to perform a complete history and physical, as well as collect a thorough
history of the patient. Having the ability to obtain and appropriately chart subjective information
by asking specific appropriate questions. It also provided me the necessary skills to assess and
complete physical assessments. I also gained practice and knowledge of what is normal and
abnormal findings.
MSN Essential I: Background for Practice from Sciences and Humanities
Recognizes that the master’s-prepared nurse integrates scientific findings from
nursing, biopsychosocial fields, genetics, public health, quality improvement, and
organizational sciences for the continual improvement of nursing care across diverse
settings.
I have achieved this essential by accessing current, relevant data, and EBR needed to
participate in the discussion board and respond to my peer each week. Furthermore, I utilized
this information to analyze the outcomes of nursing interventions, to initiate change, and to
improve practice. The achievement of this essential also came with using evidence-based studies

to determine a list of differential diagnoses and develop a plan to treat and educate our
patients. It is essential in our practice to ensure current clinical guidelines are followed.

3. Translates research and other forms of knowledge to improve practice

4. Develops new practice approaches based on the integration of research,
theory, and practice knowledge.
These core competencies were achieved by combining everything we learned throughout
the entire course including how to complete our SOAP notes for patients. Throughout the
course, our SOAP notes were based off a complete and thorough physical assessment along with
a history of past medical problems, family history, social history, review of systems, etc. We also
were taught the use of OLDCART to have the patient describe the reason for their visit. I believe
this class has prepared me to move forward with more confidence as I begin my clinical
rotation. I was provided with the tools and resources to guide my practice and to provide the
patients that I care for with the safest, highest quality of care that they deserve.
I also want to thank all of your for working together throughout the weeks within the
discussion boards to make this course a success. I wish you all the very best!
