Promoting Safety, Health, and Welfare
The National Society of Professional Engineers known as the NSPE promotes safety through
their code of ethics. These codes of ethics are put into place to make sure that the safety, health,
and welfare of the public are held to the upmost importance. These three important aspects of the
code of ethics are shown in the Fundamental Canons, Professional Obligations, and Rules of
Practice within the NSPE code of ethics.
In the Professional Obligation section of the NSPE it states, “Engineers shall at all times
strive to serve the public interest.” This states that the engineers will work for the advancement
of the safety, health and welfare of their community. “Engineers are encouraged to extend public
knowledge and appreciation of engineering and its achievements” and “Engineers shall avoid all
conduct or practice that deceives the public.” Under the Professional Obligation section of the
NSPE It promotes the safety, health and welfare of the public.
Under the Fundamental Canons of the NSPE it also states many ways the promotes the safety,
health and welfare of the public. For instance, one of the canons states, “Engineers Hold
paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public,” then it goes on to say “Issue public
statements only in an objective and truthful manner.” Engineers have to convey to the public of
anything that could harm the public or environment. Therefore, under the fundamental canons of
the NSPE code of ethics it also promotes the safety, health, and welfare of the public.
In the NSPE rule of practice it also states concern for the public or society’s safety, health,
