Assignment 2
When talking about Philosophy, you must start with the famous ancient philosopher,
Socrates. During the late 400’s (BC), Philosophy was very serious and could be dangerous.
Socrates ignored the seriousness of Philosophy; this made him one of the most interesting and
understandable philosophers. He also ignored the dangers of his chosen profession; this cost him
his life. You can see that in apology during Socrates’ trial. Socrates spent most of his days
wandering the streets of Athens and simply talking to people. It was his simple and personal
approach to discussing philosophy that made him so radical in the eyes of the government.
Socrates thought that reason finds truth. Throughout his life, Socrates questioned many people
but was never able to come up with a universal truth.
The apology by Plato is a dialogue given by Socrates during his defense trial. He was
accused of corrupting the youth, being a false teacher and not believing in the gods of the city.
Meletus was one of his prosecutors. Philosophy offered Socrates a language of expression that
allowed him to group his words within a definable context. His language of expression which
seeks to discover the truth can also be witnessed by analyzing the manner in which Socrates
defend himself against each charge brought against him.
Socrates lived in a time when people did not really question things. Moreover, Socrates’
main method of philosophizing involved asking many questions. By questioning people and
making them to think; he was able to obtain knowledge and understanding of life and its values.
