Political Science > ESSAY > Fast-Past-the-Post (FPTP) voting system. (All)
Politics in the United Kingdom are rapidly changing. However, the FPTP system is failing to put up with these transformations. Whereas the system is supposed to deliver a single party stable governmen ... t, it is based on the impression that stability refers to a single party majority government. The system is creating geographical random results. It does not consider the choice of the voters due to the higher number of the wasted votes. Additionally, the system does not allow for the voice of the minor political parties to be heard. Therefore, the FPTP system does not promote democracy. The majority of the people in government tend to ignore the voices of the minor parties. The idea that a stable government can be formed by silencing the minority voices and by the formation of a majority government should therefore be dismissed. The system promotes disunity in the country. Therefore, an alternative means should be identified to address this problem. However, the system has various advantages. It has prevented the rise of extremist parties such as BNP, which promotes racist policies. The system is also simple and hence allows even the non-educated members to participate. The person who gets the majority votes wins and therefore, it is a speedy process. People of different constituencies chooses leaders who will serve them well. The leaders get to develop an attachment to the geographical area they represent. Despite the 2010 election results, the system tends to rise to the formation of a majority government. Such a government promotes stability since it cannot be easily impeached. Therefore, the system has got its advantages and disadvantages; they should be weighed to determine whether it is serving the people of UK in the appropriate way. [Show More]
