Lord of the Flies represents Sigmond Freud’s theory of human’s being controlled by the
unconscious mind of ID, Superego, and Ego very well using the characters, setting, and events
they represent.
Each character in Lord of the Flies represents a different part of the theory represented
through their actions, thoughts, and interactions. The first form of the theory comes in the form
of the ID part of the brain. Freud explains the ID part of the brain acts as a “pleasure principle”
only seeking immediate pleasure and happiness and as well as having “knows no judgements of
value: no good and evil, no morality” [CITATION Com15 \l 1033 ]. The ID comes from the
character Jack. Jack is very violent and shows no remorse for things such as stealing Piggy’s
specs in order to satisfy Jack’s wanting of pleasure of torturing Piggy. Throughout the novel he
teases Piggy not caring about Piggy feelings or if Jack hurts others, he simply just wants to enjoy
the situation. Jack’s thoughts also represent the idea of the ID. Jack does not care for rules he
cares about who breaks them so he can vision violence occurring. Jack excitedly cries out “We
all have rules!” “Lots of rules! Then when anyone breaks em—" [ CITATION Wil54 \l 1033 ].
Jack was also not happy at all when Ralph was elected chief because that would mean Jack
would not get complete control over everyone and the island. Then throughout the novel, he has
enough and breaks into his own group with the rest of his choir and some littluns stating “[I am]
not going to be a part of Ralph's lot--"[ CITATION Wil54 \l 1033 ]. This shows the ID being
most prevalent in Jack. Also, with the breakaway, it shows the fact how Jack does not care about
keeping the island’s peace and lowering the odds of surviving and someone coming by to rescue
them, only his own pleasure and happiness. Jack also already has power by being in charge of the
