Prior Knowledge Questions (Do these BEFORE using the Gizmo.)
1.A family from Minnesota turns off the heat and flies to Florida for a winter holiday. When
they come home, all of their water pipes have burst. What do you think happened?
The water pipes had frozen up and there was a lot of pressure in the pipes. Which
caused the pipes to burst and make the family in Minnesota come home and find their
pipes all bad.
2.Spaghetti takes about 9 minutes to cook at sea level, but about 14 minutes in the
mountains. Why do you think this is so?
I think that in the mountains it takes up six more minutes because of sea level. For
example I think that there was more pressure in sea level so it cook's faster. In
addition when you are higher from sea level it cooks slower.
Gizmo Warm-up
In the Phase Changes Gizmo™, select the Micro view and
set the Ice volume to 50 cc. Click Play ( ) and observe
molecules in the solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (air)
phases.
1. In which phase(s) are the molecules held rigidly
together?
The phase that molecules hold rigidly is when it is
a solid.
2. In which phase(s) do the molecules move freely?
The phases that molecules move freely is when it
is a liquid or gas.
3. In which phase(s) are the molecules held in a defined shape?
The phase that molecules hold in a defined shape is a solid.
4. In which phase(s) do the molecules take the shape of their container?
The phase that take up the container is a liquid
