Physics definitions IEB 2023-2024
A pulse - ANS-A single disturbance in a medium that moves from one point to another
Medium - ANS-Material through which a pulse moves
Transverse pulse - ANS-A pulse where the particles disturbed move perpendicularly to
the direction in which the pulse is moving
Amplitude - ANS-The maximum displacement of a particle in the medium from its rest
position (equilibrium)
Interferende - ANS-When two or more pulses meet at the same time in the same space
Superposition - ANS-The vector addition of two pulses that occupy the same space at
the same time
Constructive interference - ANS-Occurs when the the superposition of two pulses
results in a new pulse with greater amplitude
Destructive interference - ANS-Occurs when the superposition of two pulses results in a
new pulse with a smaller amplitude
Transverse wave - ANS-A succession of transverse pulses in which the particles of the
medium move at right angles to the direction of the wave
Crest - ANS-Highest point on a wave
Trough - ANS-Lowest point on a wave
Amplitude - ANS-Maximum displacement from the position of rest
Wavelength (lambda) - ANS-The distance between to successive particles in phase
Points in phase - ANS-Move in the same direction at the same speed and have the
same displacement from the position of rest
Period - ANS-The time taken for a complete wave to pass a fixed point (in s)
Frequency - ANS-Number of complete waves that pass a fixed point per second (in Hz)
Wave speed (v) - ANS-The distance travelled by a wave in a second (m/s)
Longitudinal wave - ANS-A wave in which the particles in the medium move parallel to
the direction of propagation of the wave
