What did I think interior design was at the beginning of the program ?
Figure 2 is a drawing I made to describe my understanding and re-definition of interior design, stressing
that “interior is a way of the inhabitant tells his personal story” . The figure shows the building of 40
George Square building and the habitant’s life in within this space. Therefore, I would define interior as
“a story that shows different aspects of people’s existence over time and space”. In different interior
spaces (e.g., in the study room, in the kitchen, in stairs, in the library), people have corresponding activities and thinking, which composes one’s life itinerary.
What do I think is now?
How did I learn the different?
Before learning this course, interior was “inside of buildings” in my previous understanding, which
usually involves designing and decoration. However, I have ignored the important dimensions of inhabitants’ activities, specific time and space. I have learned from Reading interiors course Lecture 1 that the
utilization of materials and design actually reflects specific time and space dimensions, which is closely
related to inhabitants’ life and occupational experiences. Praz (1964) shows how the author furnished
his apartment over the years with a vast number of pieces of furniture, pictures and knick-knacks. This
inspires me that interior shows the itinerary of a person’s life and the interplay of correspondences.
Plastic arts and literature are intertwined in the interior design. I have learned from Lecture 2 that “a
mood is something of an atmosphere”. That is, interior is not presented by a single thing, rather, it is
represented by a combination of things. Interior design, different from architecture, puts together something as “mood board
