Purpose of study: To understand the reason for food choices mothers made for their preschool
aged children.
Research
Design
Constructivist grounded theory design was used for this study, this
theory is a qualitative approach. Grounded theory improves
understanding of the social process by methodically analyzing data
collected about social relationship within a group setting (Gray et al.,
2017, p. 28).
Sample
Selection
After ethics board approval was obtained, mothers from public health
services, early childhood and family planning centers were voluntarily
recruited. 35 interviews were conducted with 18 mothers, average age
of 30, who had varying incomes, backgrounds, and education levels.
Their preschool children ranged in age from 3 to 5.
Of the 18 mothers 17 had preschoolers at home, 16 were white and 2
Mi’kmaq, 14 had high schooler or higher and 14 lived within the city
limits and 4 in the rural area. Then 12 mothers were unemployed, 11
were married or in a common-law relationship, 10 were low income,
and 8 above the low-income rate (Walsh et al., 2015).
Data
Collection
Methods
Data collection done through a semi-structured approach with face-toface interviews initially with 16 months of data (Walsh et al., 2015).
Field notes were analyzed using grounded theory methods.
Grounded theory is used to produce real life experiences based on
authentic events (Laureate Education, 2015).
Plans for
Data
Analysis
According to Walsh et al. (2015) used both the QRS international’s
(2008) and NVivo 8 qualitative software data collection, coding, and
analysis to compare data. Walsh et al. (2015) states both an initial
phase and focused phased were used in this study.
